Dear Reader,
Hello and welcome to my website! My name is Aurora. I am an undergraduate student at Tarleton State University and I aspire to soon become a bilingual elementary educator. Even though I was born in Texas, my parents are from Mexico and I did live there for the first thirteen years of my life. Just like every individual, I am proud of my family, culture, and heritage. But growing up, I was always taught to respect others, accept their differences, and not to judge people based on their skin color, religious beliefs, or social statuses. I believe these values to be extremely important , especially when living in such a culturally diverse country like the United States.
Multiculturalism cannot be ignored. There are people from different countries, different cultures, and speaking different languages all around us. I believe every child should be taught to respect, accept, and embrace cultural differences. From what I have learned in my Children's Literature class, multicultural children's books can be a powerful tool to raise cultural diversity awareness and teach these values.
It is important to provide children with different perspectives to create multicultural awareness and to prevent discrimination and stereotyping. As a former ESL student, I have experienced the negative effects of children knowing a single story and having only one perspective. This is why, as a future teacher, I want to provide my students with a variety of perspectives and teach them to embrace multiculturalism.
By researching multiculturalism in children's literature, I hope to find quality multicultural books and other resources that I can eventually use with my students.
